Maths and English are foundational skills for young learners. As parents and educators, we know that children grow up fast, which is why we should instil maths and English skills early in young learners. It is important to educate children well, by giving them the necessary skills of maths and English, which helps them to build confidence, improve their social and communications skills, and understand the world around them. These two invaluable skills contribute to a child’s success, as they transition from childhood to adulthood. This blog explores the importance of maths and English for young learners - read on to learn more!

1. In and out of school

Schools and educators emphasise maths and English, mainly because they are used across all subjects on a daily basis. As adults, we know that children require maths and English skills at every stage of their education and throughout their lives. Whether they’re in or out of school, young learners need to acquire these skills to succeed in their future. For example, your child may be learning how to add and subtract, which goes hand in hand with the concept of spending money. On the other hand, they may be writing an essay for homework, which they may use their skills outside of school to write a card or letter to a friend. Developing and instilling these skills in their early years will benefit them throughout their lives.

2. Learning and development

A strong grounding in maths and English is vital for young learners, as it plays a major role in their learning and development. As children grow up and transition from one stage of their life to another, they begin to make sense of the world around them, explore patterns and shapes, and learn to count, read, and write. Through maths and English, they learn to develop and enhance their skills to problem-solve, evaluate methodologies, and take on bigger and more complex challenges. At NumberWorks’nWords, we offer both maths and English tutoring programmes, which provide young learners with the opportunity to develop confidence and improve their academic abilities.

3. Build confidence and improve communications skills

Firm foundational skills build confidence in young learners and enhance their communication skills, which are both pillars of success. Acquiring a strong basis in maths and mastering this skill, leads to a greater understanding and confidence in more complex subjects that your child may wish to pursue, such as science and finance. Similarly, a strong basis in English can encourage and support children in taking on bigger challenges, such as learning a new language in school, or overcoming their fear of speaking in public. In turn, it helps to improve your child’s communication skills, both orally and in writing.

4. Daily life

When reflecting on our daily lives, we quickly realise that we use maths and English in all aspects of life, consciously and subconsciously. Parents and educators are role models for children, and guide the attitudes that children form about learning. This enables us to help children foster positive attitudes towards maths and English. Find ways to incorporate enjoyable maths and English activities into your regular daily activities, like measuring how much flour we need or reading a recipe when baking. Demonstrating the importance of maths and English skills in daily life helps to motivate children to learn and expand their knowledge.

A good understanding of English and maths is more important than you might realise. We use both maths and English skills daily, and on a subconscious level. At NumberWorks’nWords, we focus our efforts on helping young learners grow and develop their skills through our maths and English tutoring programmes.
