Learn more about GCSE exams and tutoring

  • What exactly is GCSE?

GCSE stands for General Certificate of Secondary Education. It’s an internationally recognised academic qualification awarded in specific subjects studied during Year 10 and Year 11. For many subjects - including English language, English literature and maths - the entire assessment is in the form of an exam at the end of the second year. A new system of grades uses a scale from 9 to 1, where 9 is equivalent to the previous A* grade. Grade 4 is a ‘standard pass’.

  • Why are GCSE results so important?

GCSE grades provide an indicator of likely success in certain careers and higher levels of education. Many employers and educational institutions use them to set minimum entry requirements.

  • What can parents do to help?

Maintaining open communication with your child and their teachers about learning progress is vitally important during Years 10 and 11. It helps to identify minor problems early, so they can be fixed before they prevent further learning problems.

You don’t have to be a subject expert, you just need to be a coach helping your child overcome roadblocks, set priorities, find the right help and celebrate achievements. All students learn in bursts, it’s seldom a steady stream of plain sailing. Achieving their best requires clear goals and the right people to support your child.

  • How do you know if a GCSE maths tutor or English tutor is required?

When we (today’s parents) went to school, our school reports generally showed a mark out of 100, sometimes a place in class, and simple comments like ‘could try harder’, ‘progressing well’, or a pleasure to teach.

Today schools tend to report on achievement against set criteria and try to include at least one tip on how your child could improve. Sometimes, however, it can be difficult to interpret the statements and understand how well your child is tracking in terms of their future GCSE exam grades.

At NumberWorks’nWords, our tutors are completely familiar with the English and maths national curricula and the achievement criteria. We know our NumberWorks’nWords private GCSE tuition works.

We can help you interpret a school report and we offer a free assessment, including a free for your child. Following the assessment we have a where the results are analysed and discussed. We will recommend a way forward that will help your child be the best they can be. You and your child will both gain a clearer picture of any weaknesses, strengths and knowledge gaps.
